IB Chemistry is equivalent to 2 academic years of high school chemistry. It also include certain contents that are at the University Level. Chemistry SL (Standard Level) is more simplified, and in some ways easier and in other ways harder than Regular Chemistry. Chemistry HL (Higher Level) is more comprehensive, and has more in-depth content than SL Chemistry.

To help students prepare for IB exams, we discuss past papers, review notes, do practise quizzes and more. I bring 10+ years of IB preparation experience, chemistry curriculum and notes. Most of my students have obtained 6 and 7 marks upon completion of their IB program and been accepted to high-level universities, internationally and in Canada.

All students require to write an Internal Assessment (IA) for Chemistry in order to obtain their IB Diploma. Some students also chose to write their Extended Essay (EE) on Chemistry as a subject.

Here is the marking break down for both SL and HL Chemistry:

Higher Level IB Scoring:

  • Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%
  • External assessment: 80%

Standard Level IB Scoring:

  • Internal assessment (individual investigation): 20%
  • External assessment: 80%

The external assessment of chemistry consists of three written papers:

Paper 1, consists of 30 (at SL) or 40 (at HL) multiple-choice questions.

Paper 2 contains short-answer and extended-response questions on the core (and Additional Higher Level (AHL) material at HL).

Paper 3 has two sections; Section A contains one data-based question and several short-answer questions on experimental work on the core (and AHL material at HL). Section B contains short-answer and extended-response questions from each of the four options (Material, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Energy)
